PowerMILL is a 3D CAM (Computer-aidedmanufacturing) solution that runs on Microsoft Windows for theprogramming of tool paths for 2 to 5 axis CNC (Computer NumericalControl) Milling machines developed by Delcam Plc. The software isused in a range of different engineering industries to determineoptimal tool paths to reduce time and manufacturing costs as wellas reduce tool loads and produce smooth surface finishes. More than15,000 organisations use PowerMILL worldwide for 2,3 and 5-axismachining.
The code of PowerMILL originates from the software DUCT whichwas developed in 1973 by Donald Welbourne and Ed Lambourne alongwith the help of Delta Metal Group, whose funding aided thetransferral of the system into industry. DUCT was initiallydeveloped with the sponsorship of Control Data in Germany in theform of access to their time-sharing computing resources. Theadvancement of mini computers from 1982 meant that it becameeconomically viable to design complex 3D shapes using acomputer.
From 1995 to 1998 DUCT was gradually replaced with a new range ofproducts, which covered the full manufacturing cycle fromconceptual design through to manufacture. Delcam’s Power Solutionrange of products that built upon the functionality of the DUCTsuite, incorporated the latest user interface technology andoffered users many new benefits.
