InternetExplorer (formerly MicrosoftInternetExplorer and WindowsInternet Explorer, commonlyabbreviated IE or MSIE)is a series of graphical webbrowsers developedby Microsoft and included as part ofthe Microsoft Windows lineof operating systems, starting in 1995. In IE, support was, and still is, provided onlyfor the native Windows ICO format; in other browsers it has nowbeen extended to other types of images such as PNG and GIF. Usability and accessibilityInternet Explorer makes use of the accessibility frameworkprovided in Windows. Internet Explorer is also a user interface forFTP, with operations similar to that of Windows Explorer. Pop-upblocking and tabbed browsing were added respectively in InternetExplorer 6 and Internet Explorer 7. Tabbed browsing can also beadded to older versions by installing MSN Search Toolbar or YahooToolbar. CacheInternet Explorer caches visited content in the TemporaryInternet Files folder to allow quicker access (or offline access)to previously visited pages. The content is indexed in a databasefile, known as Index.dat. Multiple Index.dat files exist whichindex different content—visited content, web feeds, visited URLs,cookies, etc.Prior to IE7, clearing the cache used to clear the index butthe files themselves were not reliably removed, posing a potentialsecurity and privacy risk. In IE7 and later, when the cache iscleared, the cache files are more reliably removed, and theindex.dat file is overwritten with null bytes.Caching has been improved in IE9. Group PolicyInternet Explorer is fully configurable using Group Policy.Administrators of Windows Server domains (for domain-joinedcomputers) or the local computer can apply and enforce a variety ofsettings on computers that affect the user interface (such asdisabling menu items and individual configuration options), as wellas underlying security features such as downloading of files, zoneconfiguration, per-site settings, ActiveX control behaviour andothers. Policy settings can be configured for each user and foreach machine. Internet Explorer also supports Integrated WindowsAuthentication.
