Wikipedia is the free encyclopaedia anyone canedit, and develops accurate content but suffers vandalism.Wikipedia is not necessarily a childsafe environment and has”adult” content. This selection of topics have been carefullychosen, tidied up, and checked for vandalism and suitability (bySOS Children volunteers, whom we gratefully acknowledge). We alsogratefully acknowledge the Wikimedia Foundation for their supportand their agreement to our use of the Wikipedia logo, and tens ofthousands of contributors to Wikipedia who have written andresearched the content in the first place, including this yearadding content where gaps in the school curriculum were notcovered.
SOS Children UK, in coordination with the Wikimedia Foundation, has released a complete 2008/9 revision of the Wikipedia Selectionfor Schools, which is perhaps the most successful “checked content”project derived from the English Wikipedia. Previous revisions havebeen distributed off-line widely across the globe including by theShuttleworth Foundation to South Africa Schools, by the Hole in theWall project to rural Indian children and through SOS officesworldwide. The updated selection has the content of a 20 volumeencyclopaedia – with 34,500 pictures, 20 million words and articleson more than 5500 topics. This revision, which can be freelydownloaded or collected free from SOS Children is selected andorganised around the UK National Curriculum and aimed at 8-17 yearolds who broadly follow the UK National Curriculum and similarcurricula elsewhere in the world.
