Symantec Network Access Control protectsnetworks from unauthorized, misconfigured, and infected endpointcomputing devices. For example, Symantec Network Access Control candeny network access to the client computers that do not runspecific versions of software and signatures. If client computersdo not comply, Symantec Network Access Control can quarantine andremediate the computers. For example, if client computers haveantivirus definitions that are more than a week old, SymantecNetwork Access Control can quarantine the computers. SymantecNetwork Access Control can update the computers with the latestantivirus definitions (remediation), and then permit the computersto access the network.
Symantec Network Access Control lets you control this protectionwith Host Integrity policies. You create Host Integrity policieswith Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager Console, and then applythe policies to groups of client computers. If you install SymantecNetwork Access Control client software only, you can require thatclient computers run antivirus, antispyware, and firewall software.You can also require that they run the latest operating systemservice packs and patches, and create custom applicationrequirements. If client computers do not comply, you can runcommands on those client computers to try and update thosecomputers.
If you integrate Symantec Network Access Control with SymantecEndpoint Protection, you can apply a firewall policy to the clientsthat do not comply with Host Integrity policies. This policy canrestrict the ports that the clients can use for network access, andcan limit the IP addresses that the clients can access. Forexample, you can restrict non-compliant computer communications toonly the computers that contain the software and updates that arerequired. This integration is called self-enforcement.
If you integrate Symantec Network Access Control with SymantecEnforcer, an optional hardware device, you can further restrictnon-compliant computers from gaining access to your network. Youcan restrict non-compliant computers to specific network segmentsfor remediation, and you can completely prohibit access tonon-compliant computers. For example, with Symantec GatewayEnforcer, you can control external computer access to your networkthrough VPNs. With Symantec DHCP and LAN Enforcers, you can controlinternal computer access to your network by assigning thenon-routable IP addresses to non-compliant computers. You can alsoassign non-compliant computers to quarantined LAN segments.
