Windows 10 contains major changes to WindowsUpdate operations; it no longer allows the manual, selectiveinstallation of updates. All updates, regardless of type (thisincludes hardware drivers), are downloaded and installedautomatically, and users are only given the option to choosewhether their system will reboot automatically to install updateswhen the system is inactive, or be notified to schedule a reboot.Microsoft offers a diagnostic tool that can be used to hide updatesand prevent them from being reinstalled, but only after they hadbeen already installed, then uninstalled without rebooting thesystem.
All updates to Windows 10 are cumulative. Initially Microsoftwithheld information on the specific changes within each updatewithin its KB articles. However, since early 2016 Microsoft hasbegun releasing more detailed information on the specific changeswithin each update. Windows Update on Windows 10 supports peer topeer distribution of updates; by default, systems’ bandwidth isused to distribute previously downloaded updates to other users, incombination with Microsoft servers. Users may optionally changeWindows Update to only perform peer to peer updates within theirlocal area network.
